Get it or Forget it? What You Really Need on Your Wedding Registry

Kyle and I have been married for just over 3 months now (time flies!) and I decided I would do a post about things we got from our registry that we've loved the most, and things we ended up not needing. Some I knew we'd love, and some were more of a surprise, but I thought I'd spare you the hours of flipping through "the best kitchen tools" and "fun things for your home" Buzzfeed articles and let you know what you really should put on your wedding registry, and some things you can do without.

Get it: Popcorn Air Popper

I LOVE popcorn. And popping it this way is so fun, yummy, cheap, and healthy!! The popper and big bottle of kernels pay for themselves in no time compared to the cost of microwave popcorn. And it really does pop nearly every kernel. Plus, I just love the smell of it at work. You can put butter on if you want, or we got this White Cheddar seasoning and have been loving it. Or, you can eat your popcorn the way God intended: mixed with M&Ms of your choice.

Get it: Fun shower curtain
You're going to be using it and seeing it everyday anyways, so you might as well make it something that will bring a smile to your face! There are lots of fun ones out there, but we got this one from our Target registry and have LOVED it.

Forget it: Green thumb
Okay, so I had this vision in my head as I was preparing for marriage that I would have cute little plants in our home. I wanted to grow our own basil and mint, and I wanted to have some cute succulents in adorable little pots shaped like elephants or hedgehogs. News flash: if you didn't do it before, you're not going to start now. We were blessed to receive the special succulent soil and plant food and the adorable elephant pot, but so far the little pot has become where we put our rings when we're cooking (more on helpful elephants later), and the other stuff has sat in our storage closet, unused. I never grew plants before, and unfortunately, marriage did not change that.

Get it: Cute ring holder
Here we are at those helpful elephants. If you're like me, you're very good at losing things. And, if you're like me, you balk at the idea of this expensive ring you'll wear everyday and potentially lose. Solution? Elephants! This cute ring holder sits by my bed and my rings go on it every night. If I can't find my rings, they are on/in either this little guy or the blue one on our kitchen counter. Sooooo helpful!

Get it: Fun kitchen gadgets
Those Buzzfeed articles I scrolled through were actually helpful in getting us some of our all time favorite registry gifts. Top of my list include this veggie chopper (I can chop onions now and not look like a hooker caught in a rainstorm!), this silicone oven puller (makes it much easier to get stuff in/out), and this fun little garlic chopper (only downside is it's a little hard to get all the garlic out). Cooking made easy and fun!

Get it: First aid kit

Yes, I'm clumsy. So yes, I was very grateful when we received this registry gift and I could always count on having a band-aid around. We haven't had to use much else from it yet (knock on wood), but I feel better knowing we have this in case something happens.

Forget it: Stuff for the sake of stuff
We didn't have a lot of this, but when you're living in a student apartment and just starting your lives together, now might not be the time to register for a bunch of vases and wall art and lamps and home decor things. We were grateful that some of our stuff from our registry was not bought for this exact reason - we had nowhere to put it! Make sure to honestly evaluate your living space before you register for that huge art print or towering bookcase - maybe a more space-friendly option would be better.

Get it: A good blender

Kyle and I both love smoothies, and I have had enough experience growing up with blenders I had to pause every three seconds that I knew I wanted a good one when I got married. I probably did more research on blenders than on reception venues, tbh. This one has not disappointed. I don't think there has been once when I've had to grab a rubber spatula and mix things up to get it going again. AND it comes with single-serve to go cups!

Get it: Gift cards and money

This one has less to do with you registering and much more to do with you expressing gratitude to those who give you these. When you're just starting out, you're obviously going to be trying to be careful about money, and I am soooooo grateful for every dollar we received, either in cash, check, or gift card form. It is heaven to need something from Amazon or Target and be able to get it without technically spending a cent. It is wonderful knowing we have some gift cards to restaurants if we ever decide to go out for a date instead of staying in. PLEASE give those who help kickstart your life a HUGE thank you! (Speaking of which, we have a ton of thank you notes on our counter, just waiting to be sent out. I promise they'll get to you soon!)

Best wishes and happy registering!
